SpokeVolt started with a busted knee and a stubborn commute. In 2019, our founder, a longtime bike mechanic named Derek Ashworth, was told by his physical therapist to stop pedaling standard bikes up the hills of his Portland neighborhood for at least a year. Instead of giving up cycling altogether, he bought a secondhand electric bike from a garage sale, and it changed how he thought about riding entirely. What began as a personal workaround turned into a deep curiosity: which e-bikes were actually worth the money, which ones were overhyped, and which ones would leave a rider stranded with a dead battery and a bad attitude.

That curiosity became SpokeVolt. What started as a small blog documenting Derek's own test rides has grown into a full editorial team of cyclists, former bike shop technicians, and commuting parents who all share one goal: helping people buy an electric bike they won't regret.

Who's Behind the Site

Our team is small on purpose. Every reviewer at SpokeVolt has either worked in bike retail, raced competitively, or logged serious commuting miles on two wheels. We're not a content farm assigning bike reviews to generalist freelancers who've never adjusted a derailleur. Derek still leads product testing personally, alongside a rotating group of contributors including Priya Nair, a former mechanical engineer who now focuses on battery and motor performance testing, and Sam Ostrander, who spent eight years managing a bike shop's e-bike department before joining us full-time.

We're based in the Pacific Northwest, which honestly works in our favor. Rain, hills, gravel, and long commuting distances mean we get to test bikes in conditions that actually resemble real life, not just a flat parking lot on a sunny afternoon.

How We Review and Pick Products

Every electric bike featured on SpokeVolt goes through the same core process before it earns a place in our recommendations:

• We physically ride every bike we review. No exceptions. If a manufacturer won't send a unit for hands-on testing (or we can't source one independently), we don't publish a full review for it.
• Each bike spends a minimum of two weeks in rotation with our team, covering commuting routes, hill climbs, cargo hauling, and at least one ride in wet weather.
• We measure real-world range instead of relying solely on manufacturer claims, testing at different assist levels and rider weights.
• We evaluate build quality, component specs, brake performance, and how the bike holds up after basic maintenance neglect, because most people don't tune their bike every month.
• We factor in price against value, not just price against features, since a cheaper bike with poor after-sale support can cost more in the long run.
• We disclose when a bike was provided by a manufacturer for testing, and any unit we test is returned or donated afterward, never kept as personal property.

We also pay attention to the boring-but-important stuff: warranty terms, availability of replacement parts, and how responsive a company's customer service actually is when something breaks. A flashy spec sheet doesn't matter much if the company disappears after the sale.

What Makes SpokeVolt Trustworthy

We accept that trust has to be earned, not claimed, so here's how we try to earn it:

• We don't accept payment in exchange for positive coverage, and we never let advertisers preview or approve review content before publication.
